In addition to being simple, fast, efficient, and cost-effective, adhesive bonding technology can also join materials or structures that cannot be connected by other methods—for instance, it enables the bonding of metals to nonmetals and overcomes such challenges as the tendency for cast iron and aluminum to crack during welding, as well as the inability of aluminum to weld with cast iron or steel. Moreover, in certain applications, adhesive bonding can effectively replace welding, riveting, threaded connections, and other mechanical joining techniques. Today, the use of adhesives has permeated every sector of the national economy, becoming an indispensable technology in industrial production. Adhesive bonding is also widely employed in high-tech fields; for example, according to reports, foreign manufacturers use between 5 and 10 kilograms of adhesives in the production of a single automobile.

Surface Treatment and Bonding Strength
2010-11-19
Surface treatment of bonding materials is one of the most critical steps in the entire bonding process and a key factor determining whether the bond will succeed or fail. Since bonding primarily relies on the adhesive's ability to adhere to the surfaces of the bonded materials, surface treatment of these materials can become the primary determinant of the strength and durability of the bonded joint. However, during various stages of processing, transportation, and storage, the surfaces of bonding materials often accumulate varying degrees of oxides, rust, oil stains, adsorbed substances, and other impurities, all of which directly affect the bonding strength.
China Sets Development Goals for Adhesives and Sealants for 2010
