The development goals for China’s adhesives and sealants industry in 2010 have been set. By 2010, China’s adhesive production will reach 7.3 million tons, with an average annual growth rate of 11.5%; sales will reach 57 billion RMB, maintaining an average annual growth rate of 11.8%. In 2010, China will rank first in the world in terms of adhesive and sealant production and third in the world in terms of sales.
Over the next five years, China will focus on developing environmentally friendly and energy-efficient adhesives. At the same time, we will vigorously pursue research, development, and innovation in new adhesive products that feature high technological content, high added value, and superior performance. These include primarily: waterborne polyurethane adhesives, waterborne chloroprene rubber adhesives, high-performance and high-quality pressure-sensitive adhesives and related products, VAE (vinyl acetate-ethylene) emulsions, EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) resins, and SIS (styrene-isoprene-styrene) resins.
Waterborne polyurethane adhesives and waterborne chloroprene rubber adhesives are environmentally friendly products that have seen rapid development in recent years in industrialized countries such as Europe, the U.S., and Japan. They have already been widely used in industries including construction, furniture, and footwear. However, this technology remains largely unexplored in China. Therefore, over the next five years, China not only plans to intensify research and development efforts on these two types of adhesives but also intends to introduce advanced foreign production technologies and processes, building a production facility with an annual capacity of 5,000 tons of waterborne polyurethane adhesives to meet part of the domestic market demand.
In the area of high-performance and high-quality pressure-sensitive adhesives and products, China plans to build a production facility with an annual capacity of 5,000 tons for high-performance, high-quality acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives, along with a corresponding coating production line.
VAE emulsion is one of the excellent types of water-based adhesives. In 2004, China’s VAE emulsion production was only 103,000 tons, far from meeting market demand. Therefore, within the next five years, China plans to build another production facility with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons.
Hot-melt adhesive is an environmentally friendly adhesive. In 2004, China’s production volume was approximately 65,000 tons, and it is projected to reach 160,000 tons by 2010. However, the primary raw material used in the production of this adhesive—EVA resin—is currently entirely dependent on imports in China. Therefore, China plans to build a 100,000-ton-per-year EVA resin production facility within the next five years to meet the growing demand for hot-melt adhesives.
SIS resin is an important raw material for the production of hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives and other adhesives. Currently, China has only one production facility with an annual output of approximately 5,000 tons, which falls far short of meeting domestic market demand both in terms of quality and quantity. Therefore, over the next five years, China plans to build a new SIS resin production facility with an annual capacity of 20,000 to 30,000 tons.
