Trends in the Development of New Adhesive Products and Technologies

As research in the field of adhesives continues to deepen, the current global trend in synthetic adhesive development is characterized by the following three aspects:

         First, as construction techniques and gluing equipment continue to evolve, higher demands are being placed on adhesives.

         To improve product quality, simplify operational processes, and enhance construction efficiency, developed countries have already developed and introduced a series of specialized equipment. These devices not only provide synthetic adhesive users with better application methods but also set higher standards for the adhesives industry, creating crucial conditions for its sustained development.

         II. High-performance synthetic adhesives are growing rapidly.

         High-performance thermosetting adhesives must meet two key requirements: first, the product must simultaneously exhibit both excellent mechanical performance and functional properties; second, the manufacturing process required on the production line must be operable.

         Currently, due to the stringent quality requirements for adhesives in the construction and automotive industries as well as demanding construction conditions, developed countries are committed to developing new types of high-performance, high-quality adhesives and have made significant progress in this area.

         In recent years, although the annual growth rate of synthetic adhesive production in developed countries has been quite low—and in some product categories, production has even declined—sales have grown relatively rapidly. The primary reason for this is the significant economic benefits brought about by the development of high-performance synthetic adhesives. High-performance synthetic adhesives include epoxy, silicone, polyurethane, and newly developed modified acrylic adhesives, among others.

         3. Environmentally friendly synthetic adhesives are developing rapidly.

         As environmental protection regulations become increasingly stringent, developed countries are vigorously developing solvent-free adhesives such as water-based and hot-melt adhesives. In 1998, among the synthetic adhesive markets in developed countries, water-based adhesives accounted for 50%, hot-melt adhesives for about 20%, while solvent-based adhesives made up only 20%. In the future, the global synthetic adhesive market will be dominated by low-pollution water-based and hot-melt adhesives, and environmentally friendly synthetic adhesives will become highly sought after in the market.

         Currently, there are three main development trends in China's synthetic adhesive industry:

         1. High-performance adhesive types will develop rapidly;

         2. Environmentally friendly adhesives will become the mainstream in synthetic adhesives.

         3. The synthetic adhesives industry is accelerating the rational adjustment of its scale and structure, thereby achieving large-scale restructuring of the synthetic adhesives sector. This will concentrate production factors on leading enterprises, enabling intensive and large-scale adhesive production.
