2013-05-08
Currently, the technological level of China’s structural adhesive industry can be categorized into three tiers. The first tier comprises international adhesive manufacturers such as Momentive Specialty Chemicals (formerly Huntsman), Henkel of Germany, and Dow Chemical—companies with a century-long history of production and deeply rooted scientific and technological R&D capabilities. The second tier includes our company and others... Huitian Rubber Industry (17.040,0.09, 0.53% ) Among them are leading domestic structural adhesive manufacturers such as Beijing Tianshan. These companies entered the structural adhesive industry relatively early in China and have over a decade of production experience. They possess strong R&D capabilities and independent innovation capacity, and in certain application fields—whether in terms of product technology or brand recognition—they can compete with internationally renowned adhesive companies. The third group consists of small and medium-sized enterprises that have some market presence and sales volumes but still lack robust, sustained product development capabilities and an ample pool of technical talent. These companies primarily focus on the production and sale of low-end products.
Overall, the structural adhesive industry in China is a rapidly growing, emerging sector, with production technologies continuously evolving. The industry’s overall technological level is steadily improving, driven by the entry of international adhesive companies and the development of market demand. The pace of technological innovation in the industry continues to accelerate, leading to constant product upgrades and replacements, which in turn require continuous adaptation to new materials and new processes.
China’s structural adhesive enterprises have developed on the basis of introducing, digesting, and absorbing foreign technologies. After years of technological advancement and upgrading, the technical capabilities of leading companies in the industry—including system design expertise, processing and manufacturing technologies, product testing techniques, and equipment integration levels—have significantly improved. Currently, in emerging industries such as wind power, solar energy, and high-speed rail, China’s structural adhesive products have partially achieved substitution for imported counterparts.
In the structural adhesive industry, during the R&D phase, companies need to design unique formulations based on the actual operating conditions of downstream application fields as well as specific customer requirements. During the pilot production phase, samples must be manufactured according to customer specifications and subjected to extensive testing and evaluation until they meet the required standards. In the mass production phase, specialized process flows must be designed, and each production step must be strictly controlled. Before leaving the factory, every batch of products must pass a series of rigorous inspections. High-performance products place stringent demands on companies in terms of R&D, process technology, formulation, and testing.
Overall, the major companies in this industry are poised to enter a period of rapid growth over the next three to five years. Against the backdrop of rapid development in emerging fields such as new energy and environmental protection and energy conservation, as well as increasingly stringent industry standards, companies will place great emphasis on enhancing their core competitiveness—namely, independent innovation capabilities, product technology levels, and clean production practices. By scaling up production and increasing automation, companies will boost production efficiency and reduce product costs. In terms of product R&D, greater attention will be paid to the energy-saving, environmentally friendly, and functional attributes of products.
